Museo del Inka

Inka artifacts & mummies

Chicha Jars at Museo del Inka

This is a large, sprawling colonial house with dozens of displays of Inca and pre-Inca artifacts. The displays are not as well made as the Museo de Arte Precolombino, but the artifacts are just as good.

The Inca artifacts include ceramics, textiles and mummies. The mummies are housed in a slightly tacky fake cave, but at least you have to look through small windows into the “cave.” Nobody who doesn’t want to see a mummy will walk around a corner and be surprised by one.

Pre-Inca Mochica ceramics at Museo del Inka Cusco

There are many displays of pre-Inca civilizations and cultures, like the Mochica above. Upstairs is a tastefully done exhibit on medical skull trepanation and skull shaping, which was a cultural practice. (Not aliens).

If you are short on time, just go to the Museo de Arte Precolombino. If you’re into museums and love Inca artifacts, add this museum to your must-do list. An hour or two is sufficient.
