Q’oyllority Pilgrimage
The biggest pilgrimage in South America (late-May/Jun)
Q’oyllority (also spelled Quyllur Ritt’i and a dozen other ways) is a massive pilgrimage in the Ocongate district of Cusco region. Pilgrims hike from the village of Mahuayani (4,221m / 13,848ft) to the Q’oyllority sanctuary (4700m / 15,420ft).
The hike is only 8.3km / 5.2mi but the elevation makes it difficult. There are a dozen crosses on the way up where hikers stop to pray and rest. This is one of the most thoroughly blended Andean & Catholic events in Peru and certainly the most fascinating one.
Andean dances are the most important event. Groups of dancers are called comparsas and each comparsa travels together, has specific costumes, songs and dances.
