Corpus Christi in Cusco

All the city’s saints (Jun)

Saints waiting for procession Corpus Christi Cusco

This is a massive celebration. Every neighborhood and suburb of Cusco brings their saint to the Plaza de Armas for a procession. Many have Andean aspects to their costumes and flat Inca parasols to protect them from the sun.

Many neighborhoods are already named for a saint and bring their eponymous statue to the procession: San Jerónimo, San Cristóbal, Santa Ana, San Sebastian, San Blas, San Pedro (yes, the market). Both the Virgin of Belén and San José belong to the Belén neighborhood.

Others are less obvious. The San Antonio de Abad statue is in the San Cristóbal church. Santa Bárbara belongs to the town of Poroy. The Virgin of Natividad is in the Almudena neighborhood. The Virgin Purificada comes from the San Pedro church. The Virgin de los Remedios is in the Santa Catalina church. The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception belongs to the cathedral in the Plaza de Armas.
