Birdwatching in Iquitos

Lodges, cruises & Alpahuayo

Dusky headed parakeet at Alpahuayo

If you’re staying in Iquitos, the best place for birdwatching is Alpahuayo, which is about half an hour south of town, past the airport.

You need to go very early in the morning to see the biggest variety of birds and must bring your own guide. Guides are not available on site.

Individual guides may have other spots that they take people birdwatching near Iquitos.

Alpahuayo Entrance

Alpahuayo is managed by the Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazonia Peruana (IIAP). You can contact them with questions at their offices in Iquitos Avenida Jose Abelardo Quiñones Km. 2.5.

The other two options are staying at a lodge and going on a river cruise.
