Iquitos
The jungle city
Iquitos is a jumping off place for an endless list of Amazon activities. The city itself is an island in the jungle, only accessible by boat and plane. It feels very cut off from the rest of Peru both geographically and culturally.
The city itself is hot and loud. Most people get around by motorcycle or moto-taxi, which makes the streets extra loud. The busses are open air and curiously made of wood.

Food
You can find roast chicken and Peruvian stir-fry chifa just like anywhere else but you can also find Amazonian foods in Iquitos. One of the most popular restaurants for Amazonian fish is Blanquita, which opens at 6pm and is often sold out in an hour or two.
Cruises & lodges
If you have time, you should definitely do a multi-day trip on the Amazon River or stay in an eco-lodge. There are dozens to choose from, so do your research to find one that truly lives up to the expectations of an eco-lodge in terms of wildlife protection, supporting local communities and waste management.
Practicalities
There are lots of flights from Lima to Iquitos, which is impossible to reach by road. There are plenty of places to stay, so if you don’t reserve a place beforehand, you will still be able to find something. If you see an eco-lodge that you like, reserve before arrival.
