Iquitos Indigenous Museum

Ethnicities of the Amazon Basin

Iquitos Museum Shipibo Ceramic

Iquitos has the Indigenous Museum where you can learn about the various ethnic groups that live throughout the Amazon, not just in Peru. All signs are in Spanish and English.

There is a wide variety of ceramics, clothes and ceremonial objects. Exhibits are arranged by tribe and some are set up as if you were in their home. It’s a private collection by a local priest who worked with many of these communities.

If you are interested in the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, you should also read about the “rubber boom” that started in the 1890s.
