Ensifera Hummingbird Gardens
Best birding in the Sacred Valley
Officially named Ensifera ensifera, the scientific name of the Sword-billed hummingbird, these private gardens are the best place for birding in the Sacred Valley.
Depending on the season, you can see up to 20 species of hummingbirds, which are listed in the image below. There are lots of other bird species there, though the main viewing area is set up near an area of feeders and flowers for hummingbirds.
I recommend calling or emailing ahead 3 days to reserve breakfast there, which costs s/20. That makes it easier to get there earlier because you don’t have to bother with breakfast and can arrive early while the birds are the most active.
You can camp there the night before, if you want to start your birdwatching at first light without dealing with getting there. From Urubamba, take the colectivo to Yanahuara and tell the driver that you’re going to the hummingbird gardens. It’s the last stop before the colectivo heads back to Urubamba. You’ll have to walk about 30 minutes up from there. From Ollantaytambo you need to arrange a taxi, which cost s/40 soles in 2024.
