Ica wineries
Chile’s rival

Going on a wine tasting tour in Ica is an unexpected delight because Chile and Argentina steal the spotlight for wine in South America. Peru is not famous for wine, but it certainly produces plenty of great vintages.
Some of the best wineries have been producing wine for hundreds of years, like Tacama, where Spaniards planted the first grapes in South America in 1540.
Winery stays
You can also stay at some wineries like Queirolo, which has a lovely hotel with three swimming pools to beat the valley’s intense afternoon heat. The view from my room at Queirolo (below) was all vineyards as far as I could see.
Tours
There are about a hundred wineries in the Ica valley, so the best way to narrow down the list is to sign up for a tour. If wine tasting seems too expensive in other countries, check prices for tours in Ica. They can be less than half the price of similar tours in Chile and a fraction of tours in the US or Europe.
