Apt-en-Provence
The Capital of the Luberon
In Roman times Julia Apt was a busy city and like Arles it had a bishop as early as the 3rd Century AD. Today Apt is the capital of the Luberon and a very pleasant town in which to base yourself in order to tour the area.
There are some old streets, now pedestrianised, a medieval gate, Porte de Saignon, and of course the Cathedral church of Ste-Anne which supposedly houses the Saint’s relics found by Charlemagne on his travels.
Market
One of the best markets in Provence is held here every Saturday morning (also Tue morning July – Sept) and you can be sure to be able to find some regional specialities eg local honey, the crystallised or candied fruits for which Apt is famous and various preserves alongside high quality fruit and vegetables.
