Var
Sandwiched between the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Alpes-Maritmes and sharing the Côte d'Azur with the latter, the Var Département has a population of just over 1 million and a land area of nearly 6000 km.
Like most French counties the Var takes its name from a physical feature, the Var River which flows along it
s eastern boundary.
The Prefecture of the Var is Toulon, the French Navy's main port, and the sub-prefectures are Brignoles and Draguignan. Important towns include the famous resorts of St-Tropez, Hyères and Saint Raphael. and for visitors interested in history and architecture there are Roman ruins at Fréjus as well as a splendid Medieval cathedral.
