Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

The mountainous Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is located in between the Alpes-Maritimes and the Hautes-Alpes. It used to be part of the old province of Provence but is now part of PACA - the Région of Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur.

Castellane

The main cities are Digne-les-Bains (the Prefecture), Manosque, Sisteron, Barcelonnette, Castellane and Forcalquier. The population is about 162,000 and the land area is 6925 square km so it's fair to say it is quite sparsely populated!

The Grand Canyon du Verdon

It contains the amazing Grand Canyon du Verdon in the south of the County which is well worth a day trip to see if you are staying on the coast. The main road from Cannes to Castellane and ultimately Grenoble (the D85) is the Route Napoleon travelled by the great man and his army on his return from Elbe.

Sub-prefectures: Barcelonnette, Castellane and Forcalquier
