Monument-aux-Morts

Monument to the Dead

High on the Plateau of the Authion, above the Col de Turini, there is plenty of evidence of military action. It dates from WWII and even earlier and the most well-known is rather sombre Monument aux Morts.

Constructed to honour 56 fusiliers who died in the battle to defeat the Germans in 1945, the Monument is impressive.

Earlier conflicts

The same battleground saw action by the French Convention troops in their battle against the Austrian and Sardinians in 1793 and also when the County of Nice tried to defend itself against secession to France in 1860.

Take the circular tour and you will come across the remains of some 19th Century forts and barracks. Also discover the Cabanes Vieilles and a wrecked US Stuart Tank.

The Maginot Line

Additionally, there is an unfinished fort which became part of the Maginot Line. This was a series of forts and other works constructed in eastern France before WWII.
