Nice Beyond (L'Arrière Pays Niçois)
The Arrière Pays Niçois, literally Nice Beyond or simply "The Beyond", refers to the hinterland or "backcountry" of Nice and is historically more or less synonymous with the County of Nice - see my Nice's Best app. The region nestles beside the Italian border and is a vast territory containing spectacular perched villages, high mountains, beautiful valleys and even a small population of wolves!
A large portion of all this is protected by the Mercantour National Park, with its 600km of footpaths, 2000 species of plants and 58 species of mammals.
Yet two of the most beautiful sections of the Park lie only an hour's drive from Nice: the stunning Vallée-de-la-Vésubie and its scenic rival the Vallée-de-la-Roya to the east. Between the two valleys is the Authion Massif over which the Monte Carlo Rally wends its way and further east, towards the Italian border, is the fascinating Vallée-des-Merveilles with its 'high level' evidence of prehistoric habitation.
