Ventimiglia
Twenty mile town
The coastal town of Ventimiglia is actually about 4mi/7km across the border with Italy on the old Roman road, the Via Julia Augusta between Piacenza in Italy and La Turbie. In effect, it is actually divided into two parts by the River. The old town on the right bank of the Roya and the new town on the left bank.
Two reasons to visit (at least!)
We’ve included Ventimiglia here for two reasons. Firstly, we have here a fine example of a medieval town which, like Dolceacqua, has not become spoiled by tourism. Secondly it has an exceptional Market, held every Friday, which is a ‘must visit’ when staying in or around Nice!
Centro Storico – the historic centre
Discover and explore the medieval old town by crossing the River Roya. Ascend the fascinating, narrow old streets following the signs for the Centro Storico. Head towards the Romanesque Cattedrale dell’Assunta and its 11th Century octagonal belfry and you will find yourself in the main street, the Via Garibaldi originally ‘la piazza’. From here you can explore the rest of the fascinating old town.
