Montpellier: Antigone District
Post-Modern Montpellier
The impressive Antigone District is located to the east of the Place de la Comédie and can be accessed by walking through the Polygone Shopping Centre.
This huge neo-classical collection of buildings was constructed on the site of the former Joffre Barracks of which only the Citadel remains. The late Mayor Georges Frêche hired the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill whose spectacular design included pediments, entablatures and pilasters all on a large scale alongside low-cost housing, shops and other facilities.
Enter the District from the east via the place du Nombre d'Or which leads you to the place du Millénaire with its cypress avenue. Pass through and admire two more squares (Thessalie & Péloponèsse) which continue the Classical theme until you come to the splendid crescent shaped esplanade de l'Europe . Across the river Lez stands the impressive Hôtel de la Région Languedoc-Roussillon also designed by Bofil.
In total the Antigone District forms an axis of one 1km/0.62mi from west to east and is often called the Champs Elysées of Montpellier by the locals!
