Anduze

Gateway to the Cévennes

The pleasant small town of Anduze, on the banks of the river Gardon, is busy with pavement cafés and restaurants.

History & sights

In the 12th Century the Lords of Anduze were the most powerful in the region and by the 16th Century it had 7000 inhabitants, although it has now only about 3000. Its most striking building is the medieval Clocktower erected in 1320 as part of the defences against the armed bands who roamed the area. The 'meridian' sundial is unusual as you can read each quarter hour between 11.00 and 13.00 easily.

Also worth seeing is the Pagoda Fountain erected in 1648 by a citizen of Anduze who favoured far-eastern architecture!

Cévennes

The nearby Cévennes region is full of amazing landscapes and traditions stretching back centuries. Its wild and rugged terrain has changed little since the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson travelled through the mountains with a donkey called Modestine.
