Cycling: City & Touring
Bikes as Transport
Notwithstanding the challenges of a damp climate and hilly terrain, getting around by bike is feasible and often fun wherever you are in Scotland.
City Cycling
In the cities there are enough cycle lanes to keep you out of traffic for much of the time (if you plan your route carefully). Cycle theft is a problem, so always lock up your bike; with a quality lock if it's a good one.
Cycle Touring
Given the stunning scenery and quiet roads, cycle touring in Scotland's countryside can be a real pleasure.
Most rural roads – except major ones that are prefixed with an "A" – are pretty good for cycling. But if you're planning a longer trip you'd do best to focus on one of several national routes that link together and signpost journeys along Scotland's quieter roads.
