Fish & Chips

FC

Fish & Chips has long been the cornerstone takeaway dish in any Scottish town and is ideal if you're looking for an inexpensive hot meal and don't mind picnicking on a seaside or park bench – as many places are solely takeaways.

In general you can't go wrong, but the places below are particularly good and most have featured in the British national Fish & Chip Awards

Etiquette!

Otherwise it's worth knowning a couple of things before you enter a chip shop. First it's normal to say what you want as soon as you know, even if others are waiting ahead of you, so the staff can start cooking the fish.

Also any menu item with the word "supper" after it means "with chips": eg fish supper; sausage supper; haggis supper - yes you can get haggis deep-fried with your chips too.

Note: Scottish chippies may be famed for deep-fried Mars bars, but in reality few offer it, as it tends to spoil the oil. So you'll need to ask around to hunt this "delicacy" out.

Anstruther Fish Bar (Fife)

Top-notch chippie (l,d; £)

Loch Fyne Oyster Bar (Argyll)

Upmarket bistro & deli in an old lochside barn (b,l; ££)

The Real Food Cafe (Tyndrum)

Fresh & local fish & chips (b,l,d; £)
