Scourie
Highland fly-fishing HQ
Scourie’s a small crofting village that’s become a minor service centre on the NC500.
It’s remarkable for the age of much of the local rock – Lewisian gneiss, Europe’s oldest rock (circ. 3bn years-old); well-known for the nearby presence of nature reserve Handa Island; but perhaps most spectacular of all for its excellent fly fishing. Even beginners can usually catch several fish a day in the waters hereabouts.
Fishing
Brown trout are the key draw here and the smart Scourie Hotel has written this useful newcomer’s guide to fishing in Scourie.
You can also get tackle and licences from the town’s petrol station, the Scourie Filling Station – location of this entry’s map marker.
Alternatively rent gear/book a guide with Assynt Fly Fishing.
