Day 5: Lochinver–Tongue
82 miles/2hr 15min
Between Lochinver and Kylesku travellers can follow the lovely but narrow and twisty B869 for 23 miles for fine views over pretty beaches. Or, if that sounds too slow or you’re driving a 16ft+ vehicle, then you should head inland to Loch Assynt on a better road, then head north from there.
If you can, then stop at Kylesku to take a 75min boat tour with North West Sea Tours (3 daily; adults £22) – they head through some glorious wild scenery on sheltered waters to take in Eas a' Chual Aluinn; Britain’s highest waterfall.
North of Kylesku the lands get slowly starker revealing an increasingly wild and bleak Highland landscape of uncompromising rocks and bogs. This is Highland GeoPark country – a UNESCO designation which protects much of the region which is best appreciated with a bit of geological background, for which the Rock Stop visitor centre comes in handy.
