Tongue

Crofting village with services

Heron on the wing

The small crofting village of Tongue offers all the basic services and gathers below Castle Varrich (Gaelic: Caisteal Bharraich), a ruined 14th-century pile built by various Mackay lairds.

The castle makes for a good hour’s hike to and from the village, and rewards with views over the Kyle of Tongue where the sharp profiles of Ben Hope (3040ft) and Ben Loyal (2509ft) overlook golden estuary sands.

Food & lodging

Tongue has a couple of good pubs for food, the upmarket Tongue Hotel, a Youth Hostel and a clutch of B&Bs.
