Rubha nan Sasan

Cove Battery WWII site

Cove Battery

A must for those with an interest in WWII history, the Rubha nan Sasan coastal battery was built in 1941 to protect the area from German invasion.

Made from reinforced concrete, the structures – which include an observation post and gun-emplacements – have weathered well.

Memorial

Also at the site is a war memorial to all those who lost their lives in the Arctic Convoys as well as a memorial cairn to the American sailors who were lost when SS William H. Welch wrecked nearby.

The presence of this military-industrial complex, presents an odd juxtaposition with the remote and gentle natural setting hereabouts; there’s a path (steep in places) around it that you can walk while you ponder this.

Allow about 90mins for this detour from the main NC500 route.
