The Scottish Parliament

The seat of Scotland's democracy

Scottish Parliament

Built as the result of a 1997 referendum in favour of devolution, the Scottish Parliament was built to the design of Spanish architect Enric Miralles. After a budgeting fiasco which saw costs spiral to more ten times the projected £30 million, the buildings were opened in 2004.

The results are certainly innovative, though perhaps a little too finicky. This comes mainly from the many themes and messages the architect was playing with – all within an overall structure that tries to mimic upturned boats.
