Ben Lawers
Satisfying Peak (5–6hrs) & Neolithic rock art
You don't have to head far north into the Highlands to find serious mountains, as Ben Lawers (1214m/3,982ft) proves. It's Scotland's tenth highest and overlooks Loch Tay as well as a large swathe of lower mountains to the south. The views are fantastic.
Info boards provide some interesting insights into local rock art that dates back around 5,000 years.
Hiking
A short easy nature trail starts at the visitor centre, but the real action is at the end of a well defined trail to the summit of Ben Lawers (10.5km/6.5 miles; 5–6 hrs) which also starts here. The route's only moderately hard but winter conditions can call for specialist equipment. Further info and map links here.
Ben Lawers car park lies 6 miles NE of Killin, North of Loch Tay, on the hill road off the A827.
Free entry; parking £3
