Inveraray
Not all planned Scottish towns are ugly!

Pretty whitewashed Inveraray shimmers on the tranquil waters of the adjacent Loch Fyne and was built from scratch in 1745 by Georgian architects on the site of a ruined fishing village in walking distance of Inveraray Castle. The pretty town centre is quickly explored:
• The Neoclassical Inveraray Parish Church is unusual for being in two parts to serve both the local Gaelic and English-speaking communities at the same time.
• Inveraray Jail (this entry’s map location; daily: April–Oct 9.30am–6pm; Nov–March 10am–5pm; adults £15.95; full & latest times & rates.) was in use up to the 1930s, but is now an entertaining museum of prison history from the Middle Ages on.
