The Falkirk Wheel

Ingenious & graceful engineering

WHAT THE................

The Falkirk Wheel is a fantastical solution to the problem of joining waterways on two levels. It uses two revolving scoops, which hold some 300,000 gallons of water, to raise or lower boats between the Forth and Clyde Canals – enabling canal boats to cross Scotland.

Scotland's Olympics

There’s an informative visitor centre, but the whole thing is best experienced on one of the eight daily boat trips, bookable online.

A far more unusual activity possible here (Mar–Oct) is waterwalking – in giant see-through floating balls. The activity is offered by Outdoor Trax +44 782 800 8997 and costs £7.50 per person. They also rent out canoes and kayaks.
