Glamis Castle
Longstanding royal castle with lovely gardens
Romantic as this 17th-century Glamis Castle, with its medley of towers and turrets, may look, it's mostly famous for its literary association: the King's murder in Shakespeare's Macbeth took place here.
Inside, rooms are of interest partly because all their furnishings, tapestries and suits of armour are themed by era. A few rooms are said to be haunted and a secret bedchamber helps add to the air of mystery.
The Castle gardens are notable as the work of landscape gardener Capability Brown.
Incidentally, the castle has been a royal residence since 1372; it was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and birthplace of Princess Margaret.
