Stately Homes & Gardens
The Laird's Hous
Scotland's one-percenters have found many ways of living in some style in the past. Stately Homes abound, with some in refurbished old castles. Most have taken advantage of the fact that Parks and Gardens tend to flourish in the rains of Scotland.
If nosing around these stately homes, then wandering their gardens before high tea in an adjoining cafe, appeals, then you'll be spoiled for choice.
And if you think you'll make a habit of all this then consider joining either Historic Environment Scotland or the National Trust for Scotland. Both run quite a few Scottish stately and joining either (around £50/adult/year) provides free admission to their properties.
Just the gardens
If it's just the gardens you're interested in, then note that many stately homes have separate (lower) prices if you just want to wander the grounds. Picnic anyone?
In the cities you can have much the same pleasure in Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden and at Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Entry to both is free.
