Blair Castle

See how the Scottish nobility lives

Blair Castle, Scotland

The ancient seat of the Dukes of Atholl, stately Blair Castle dates back to 1269, but Jacobite era damage and subsequent rebuilding and restyling (lots of turrets) has given it a more recent look.

Inside, all sorts of artefacts trace the castle's history, including antique furniture, art, arms and armour. Highlights are Bonnie Prince Charlie's gloves and pipe.

An interesting piece of trivia is that the Duke of Atholl is the only man in Britain to be allowed a private army. His Atholl Highlanders are Europe's last private army.
