Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum

Grand Baroque edifice with a mighty civic art collection

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

Glasgow’s mighty Victorian industrialists provided the wealth for the Kelvingrove and the extravagant building not only testifies to their brash self-confidence but also hints at its impressive treasures.

These warrant a couple of hours of anyone’s time, in part because they are so eclectic. Artefacts include a World War II spitfire plane dangling from a ceiling; Egyptian relics; priceless paintings of Old Masters (inc. Rembrant and Raeburn); Salvador Dali’s stunning St John on the Cross; ancient suits of armor; and even some contemporary art.

There's also a good amount of Scottish art including a section devoted to the city’s most famous artist son Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The free floor-plan leaflet outlines where all the museum's highlights lie. Be sure to pick one up.
