Melrose Abbey

Impressive Medieval ruin

Scotland

The long and colourful history of Melrose Abbey began in 1136 and has pretty much been punctuated by pillage and damage during wars between the Scots and English.

The results are a beleaguered but romantic spot where graceful lancet windows and lavish medieval carvings preside over rose pink ruins. The outlines of cloisters, a kitchen and various monastic buildings can be traced.

Its most famous vestige of the past however is an embalmed heart, found here in 1920, and said to be that of Robert the Bruce.
