Chiang Dao
Best hike in Thailand
Around 70km north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao is a small town with little of interest for visitors apart from a Tuesday market that attracts some colourfully dressed Lisu people from villages around.
A dramatic mountain
However, just a short distance to the west of town, the huge bulk of Chiang Dao mountain (2240 metres) rises almost sheer out of the plain. It’s Thailand’s third-highest mountain but by far its most dramatic, and a hike to its summit makes for a challenging but rewarding experience.
Permits and dates
All hikers need to obtain a permit and to be accompanied by a certified guide, both of which can be arranged through guest houses such as Malee’s and Chiang Dao Nest at the base of the mountain. The hiking season runs from November to February, and most hikers take one day to go up, camp near the summit then descend the following day.
Unusual sights
On the way you might catch a glimpse of gorals, owls and rare plants, though the opium that used to proliferate here has now been eradicated.
The best approach is to hire a vehicle to get to the guest houses at the foot of the mountain.
