History

The Multangular Tower, York, August 2013

York's history stretches back around two thousand years to Roman times.

It was settled by a number of invaders, before growing into a thriving medieval city. Fashionable Georgian society later left its imprint with stylish buildings. In the 19th century, booming new industries became the basis for its economy.

York's Growth

  • The Romans settled roughly where the Minster is, with a route down Stonegate to the river, reaching it about where the Guildhall is.
  • The Viking settlement was centred nearer to the Foss.
  • The Normans also built their castle in the same area, for strategic reasons.
  • Medieval York York spread within the city walls.
  • In later centuries York started to grow beyond its walls, expanding in roughly concentric circles.
