Budget accommodation

Cheap and cheerful

There are several popular hostel options. Three hostels come highly recommended:

Out of town (about a 15 minute walk along the River Ouse) is the large YHA hostel. (This has the advantage of car parking.) Website & Booking. Dorms from around £30, twin rooms around £70, family rooms about £130. (Discount for YHA members.)

• Bang in the centre of town near the Minster, off Stonegate, is the independent hostel Fort Boutique. Website & Booking. Dorms from around £35, twin rooms around £90, family rooms about £150.

Nearest to the station, and a ten minute walk into the centre of town from Micklegate, the Safestay York hostel is certainly the grandest and most stylish. Great facilities in a spacious facility in a large georgian townhouse.

Website & Booking. Dorms from around £33, twin rooms around £90, family rooms about £150.

Alternatively, consider a budget-range bed and breakfast. This may provide more privacy, though will not have the same facilities for kitchen use or lounges.

Finally, a further option would be a homestay, for example via Airbnb, where parking may be available.
