Taxis
As in other English cities, there are two kinds of cars for hire.
Taxis (officially "Hackney Carriages") are clearly labelled with a taxi sign. They can stop to pick up passengers in the street, be called by phone, or wait at public taxi ranks around the city (such as in front of the station). Their fares are fixed by York city council.
The main city centre ranks by day are:
Station Area York Station, Exhibition Square (Art Gallery)
Castle Area Tower Street (near Clifford's Tower), St Saviourgate (near Shambles), Rougier Street.
Minster Area Duncombe Place (Minster)
Private hire cars are also licensed, but have to be booked in advance by phone, and are not allowed to pick up passengers in the street. There are many local companies, such as Fleetways (Tel. +44 1904 645 333).
The phone number below is for Station Taxis.
Standard rate taxi fares around £2.90 (nighttime £3.70) + 10p per 80 metres.
