Ye Olde Starre Inne
The oldest pub in town (l,d; ££)
Said to be the oldest licensed pub in York, it dates back to 1644. In the English civil war that century, wounded soldiers were cared for in its cellars.
A large sign across Stonegate shows the way to the pub, which is hidden down a snickleway. It is surprisingly large inside, with several rooms (recently smartened up) to choose from, with quite a selection of beers to choose from.
Thursday nights (open till 1am) can be very busy, with live entertainment.
Staff are generally very friendly. The pub is now owned by a large chain and offers an very extensive menu of typical pub food (fish and chips, pies, sausages, sandwiches) as well as some more unexpected fare. There are also a number of sharing platters available. The acceptable, though perhaps pricey, food is served noon till 9pm. (The jury still seems to be out on the quality of the chips...)
Warning: Pub claims to be haunted by a cat bricked up in the walls!
