Like shops used to be
A York institution for over a hundred years, Barnitts is a large local ironmonger's and household store with sprawling departments along Colliergate in labyrinthine rooms.
It caters for just about every household, kitchen, garden, diy, furniture, tools, fixtures, fittings and electrical need or whim.
Unlike many local shops, Barnitts shows no signs of flagging in the face of out-of-town chain stores. On the contrary, it recently spread out into adjacent premises.
Also has a growing internet mail order service, but the web selection doesn't really give the same shopping experience.
TIP You might find a souvenir of your visit here. They have small sized framed historic railway posters of York, for instance. Or perhaps something useful instead?
