York Minster Nave
The widest nave in England
This is STAGE 1 of the The Minster in-2-Hours Itinerary
The nave is the area where large congregations sit, and where processions entering from the West Door walk towards the altar at the east end.
Work began on the nave in 1291 (around 70 years after the start of the building) and is in Decorated Gothic style (vaulted roofs, pointed arches, large windows and spires).
West Door and Front The window above the door contains mostly 14th century glass. Notice the very elaborate stone carving. The large heart shape at the centre of the window is known as the Heart of Yorkshire.
The stained glass windows on either side of the nave depict mainly biblical scenes, but include other commemorative historical features.
