Art
Inevitably, historical architecture is deservedly an overwhelming part of the York experience. Both the street layout of the city and the many, well-preserved and varied historic buildings reflect the life of its residents over two millenia.
Apart from the splendid medieval stained glass windows of York's Churches, pictorial art plays a much smaller role, and even the Art Gallery has a specialist collection of ceramics.
For applied arts, Fairfax House and the Merchant Adventurers Hall have perhaps the best collections.
