Art Gallery

Themed paintings and modern pots

Guarded over by a statue of local 19th century artist William Etty, the Victorian building of York art gallery stands opposite Bootham Bar.

The gallery has recently begun an exciting new stage of its history following an extensive refurbishment and remodelling of its interior. This included the uncovering of the original glass roof in the upper rooms, to provide extended and improved exhibition space.

There are changing special exhibitions but the permanent painting collections are given over to largely British paintings arranged by themes such as wartime, York scenes, women, portraits, and a European old masters section. As you would expect, it boasts a fair selection of work by its founder. Of local interest is an LS Lowry painting of Clifford's Tower (1952/3). There is also a substantial collection of international 20th century studio pottery.

Apart from its collection of decorative arts, one of the particular features of the gallery is its extensive collection of ceramics.

The gallery experience is rounded off by a shop, as well as a café (outdoor seating in summer) managed by nearby bistro Café No 8.
