Omonia Square & Around
Omonia Square was once the hub of the newly formed Greek state.
It was originally called Plateia Anaktoron (Palace Square) when it was built in 1846, Otto Square after the King of Greece then Omonia (Concord) Square in 1862. But 1957 saw a complete overhaul of the area with a four lane road constructed, cutting off all pedestrianised areas.
The 1960’s was a popular time for the Square as at its centre was a beautiful water fountain and arrangement of grass and flowers, making it the perfect backdrop for Greek films of that era.
The water feature was a particular favourite with Athenians living in a city centre with the glass feature of The Dromeas–The Runner by sculptor Costas Varotsos.
