Central Market
Varvakios Agora
Built in the late 1800’s, the Athens Central Market is a must visit when in the city.
Originally open air, a glass roof and basement were added in 1886. Today it’s a hive of activity and a place where the meat, fish, freshly ground coffee, fruit and vegetables and general consumables can be found–an Athens instituion.
Fish
The fish market is the largest in Europe and five to 10 tons of fresh fish are delivered every day from islands such as Symi, Naxos and Paros. The most popular fish for sale is the oily fish so loved by the Greeks with their ouzo such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel. You’ll also find local delights such as shellfish, cuttlefish, octopus and calamari.
The oldest fish stall is owned by the Korakis family and has been present in the market since 1926 where sea bream, hake, sea bass and red mullet are on offer.
