Barbados Wildlife Reserve
A favourite with young kids
A small animal sanctuary set under shady mahogany trees, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve is a low-key attraction that is immensely popular with young children. The green monkeys are the prime draw – their chattering presence particularly felt around feeding times (11am & 2pm). They originally came to Barbados from West Africa in the 17th century, stowed away in slave ships.
Other reserve inhabitants that wander freely across your path include non-native brocket deer, hares, red-footed tortoises – frequently copulating – and the odd peacock. Don’t miss the large enclosure for breeding Cuban rock iguanas.
Grenade Hall
While here, consider crossing the car park to meander round the short (and extremely slippery) trail down into the shady mahogany woodland surrounding the former plantation of Grenade Hall. It is peppered with interesting information boards about plants and their medicinal uses, as well as cosy seats, where you can rest and soak up the sounds of the forest.
