Ragged Point Lighthouse
A proud relic of bygone times
Ragged Point, or East Point – as it is also known – is almost, but not quite, Barbados’ easternmost tip. Atlantic breakers crash against the limestone cliffs on this dramatic rocky promontory, which offers fine views up the East Coast.
On a bluff above the point, the Ragged (or East) Point Lighthouse stands sentinel. Built in 1875, it is one of four nineteenth-century lighthouses in Barbados, and has recently been restored, though it’s not possible to climb the 97-foot (29.5m) tower. Heading due east out into the ocean from here, you wouldn’t make land until hitting the Gambia, in West Africa, well over 2,800 miles (4,500km) away.
The lighthouse is not open to the public.
By car: 15 miles (24km) broadly eastwards out of Bridgetown, initially along Highway 4 (40min).
By bus: The are no direct buses.
