North Point

Barbados may not be known for its soaring peaks, but is still affords some magnificent views, especially along the East Coast.

A snap from Cherry Tree Hill is the must-have photo, taking in the foaming coastline as far as Ragged Point. Morgan Lewis Mill, a little further down the hill, is an equally rewarding viewpoint. The imposing escarpment of Hackleton’s Cliff – on which St John’s Church is also perched – allows you a bird’s-eye view of the East Coast’s crashing surf and giant boulders.

Yet arguably the most dramatic vista is of the surging waves pounding the cliffs below at North Point (pictured above).

At the opposite end of the island, the old military signal station at Gun Hill affords panoramic views of the island’s entire southern coastline, even as far as the ships docked in Bridgetown port – which of course was its original purpose.

And if it’s the Heavens you want to marvel at, then head for the observatory on a Friday night for a spot of stargazing at the Harry Bayley Observatory.
