Cherry Tree Hill

Iconic East Coast viewpoint

Arguably, Barbados’ most breathtaking view is from Cherry Tree Hill. Here, you can gaze southwards across the mountainous – by Barbados standards – Scotland District in the parish of St Andrew, and along the East Coast, with Ragged Point (also known as East Point) in the far distance. With binoculars, you can make out the lighthouse at the tip.

Cherry Tree Hill lies within the boundary of the St Nicholas Abbey plantation. Turning your back to the ocean, you are faced with an avenue of magnificent mahogany trees, which lead back into the estate; these replaced the eponymous cherry trees back in the eighteenth century.

Note: Since this is a popular stop on island bus tours and vendors lease their spot from the plantation owners, prices for refreshments and local crafts sold here are fairly expensive.

By car: 17miles (27km) NE of Bridgetown. Follow Highway 2A northwards until Mile and a Quarter, then follow the signs to St Nicholas Abbey, and continue past the entrance, to the hilltop viewpoint.

By bus: There is no bus to Cherry Tree Hill, but #4A from Princess Alice Bus Terminal (Bridgetown) terminates at Shorey Village (55min); Cherry Tree hill is a steep 1.8km uphill hike from there. Consult the bus timetable.
