Northern Barbados In-a-Day
Heritage, rum & coastal views
Some of the island’s most spectacular scenery and interesting sights lie in the north of the island, in the parishes of St Lucy and St Peter, away from tourist bustle of the western and southern coasts.
Morning
Head northwards along Highway 2A. You may want to swing by Rock Hall, just off the Lawrence Johnson roundabout (named after a Barbadian politician), and across from St Thomas’ parish church, to see the Rock Hall Freedom Monument, commemorating the first recorded post-Emancipation community in Barbados.
Returning to Highway 2A, you continue northwards until reaching the wonderfully named Mile-and-a-Quarter. From here, follow the signs to St Nicholas Abbey. This impressive plantation house, whose tours sadly pay scant attention to the enslaved population that laboured there, nevertheless offers an appealing range of activities. A few hundred metres from the driveway, Cherry Tree Hill, affords the most extensive views of the East Coast.
