Northern Bridgetown
Northern Bridgetown has a utilitarian feel to it, as the main road out of central Bridgetown takes you past the cruise ship terminal and the port – both located in the Deep Water Harbour – before you reach the Shallow Draft, the departure point for some of the catamaran cruises and the Atlantis Submarine.
Beyond, the impressive main stand of the Kensington Oval cricket stadium (above) marks the start of the Mighty Grynner (Spring Garden) Highway. Named after a popular calypsonian, this short (2 mile/3km) stretch of dual carriageway heads northwards, hugging the coastline.
Midst various warehouses on the land side, you pass the Mount Gay Visitor Centre, notable for its rum-tasting tours. On the sea side, the sparkling sands of adjoining Brandon’s and Brighton beaches host Rascals – a vibrant beach bar. After a small industrial estate, the highway ends at the Frank Worrell Roundabout – named after a Barbadian cricketing legend – where Barbados’s exclusive West Coast begins.
No buses travel along the Mighty Grynner Highway.
