Omiš
Pretty resort town
Surrounded by dramatic grey crags, Omiš is a pleasant resort town straddling the estuary of the river Cetina.
The compact town centre of stone buildings and cafe-crammed alleys is a pleasant place to wander, and there is a long, expansive shingle beach on the seaward side. A short but steep walk uphill from the town is the Mirabela Fortress, offering sweeping views of the surrounding coast.
Cetina Gorge
Several travel agencies grouped near the Cetina estuary offer boat trips up into the Cetina Gorge, where the river is pressed on both sides by stark cliffs, and herons can be seen patrolling the reedy banks. Trips usually terminate at Radmanove Mlinice, a large cafe-restaurant with watermill and playpark, before heading back to Omiš.
Duće Beach
Several kilometres northwest of Omiš along the road to Split is Duće Beach, a long stretch of fine shingle that is one of the most outstanding almost-sandy beaches in Dalmatia. Duće itself is a relatively uninteresting stretch of holiday apartments enlivened by a modest scattering of cafés, and you’re better off staying in Omiš rather than basing yourself there.
There is a tourist office just off the town’s main street (this entry’s map location).
By car: Omiš is 25km southeast of Split along the main coastal road
By bus: Omiš can be reached on bus #60 from Split (roughly every 30min). Inter-city buses from Split to Makarska and Dubrovnik also pick up and drop off in Omiš.
