Beaches
Croatian beaches come in all shapes and sizes, from sweeping bays of sand to shingle coves and rocky perches. Beaches which are described as “sandy” in the brochures often turn out to be fine shingle, or indeed rock-pebble beaches which have a sandy sea-bed. In this guide we’ve tried to be accurate about what to expect.
Safety
Many beaches do have a rough or stony sea floor once you start paddling, and there might be sea urchins lurking between the rocks - water shoes or sandals are recommended, especially for kids.
Amenities
The busier beaches often have cafes, and might have hire-facilities for paddle boards or windsurfing nearby.
Shoreline hotels, cafes and other beach-based businesses are allowed to set out sun-loungers and parasols, and ask you to pay for them, but are not allowed to take over the entire beach – the coastline is, according to the Croatian constitution, open to all.
